Hello my name is Hunter and I am a fourth year medical student in the Hartford area. Why pick me to tutor you or your child in AP subjects, SAT, ACT amongst others? Not only do I have 4 years of tutoring experience but through the process of gaining my medical degree, I have become an expert on test taking. I will help your child not only understand the material, but understand it in a way that will be effective in increasing their test scores, bringing tangible results to their learning. I will analyze their academic strengths and teach them how to learn to use those strengths for long term memory and effective analysis (what most higher level professions require). I will teach them how to research the internet and libraries for free or low cost study materials that fit their learning strengths (something most medical and law students have to learn in order to succeed). I will teach them how to use their strengths in choosing how to study. I will teach them not only how to study the material, but what makes a good study environment for them (ie where and when should I study? Am I more efficient at home, school, library or coffee shop? When I’m there, should I listen to music or is that distracting?). I will teach them how to discover what skills a test might require through research and approaching their teachers (ie will this test require more of my memorization skills or my analysis skills and how that would change the way you study?). I will teach them how to utilize their teachers in off-hours in order to better learn overall how to approach studying for their exams (most teachers write their own exams, except for the AP exam itself of course). I will teach them a variety of long term memorization skills, particularly those I have found effective for different learning styles while in medical school. I will teach them how to prepare for the test taking aspect of the exam (ie how do you lower your nerves, what is the right way to take practice exams etc) , which might be just as important as learning the material itself. Finally, throughout this whole process I will be teaching the material itself, with an eye on producing results for your child. In addition, due to my medical training, I can also recognize signs of learning disabilities or eyesight problems, which are under-diagnosed even among teenagers. HOWEVER, I CANNOT DIAGNOSE OR TREAT YOUR CHILD. I can advise you to have your child seen by their doctor if I think there might be signs. I can only work on weekend days and not the weekend before a medical school exam. I will try to work with your schedule outside of this. I charge $50 an hour and all of my tutoring sessions are at a medical school in the Hartford area. I only take 2 students a semester. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend that the parents stay for the session. I find that they learn some of my learning techniques and can more effectively encourage their child in studying.

I think I’m a pretty funny and nice guy and teens usually get along with me pretty well. I spent three years in West Africa serving with the Peace Corps, so I’ve got some interesting stories too. I’m not there to chastise them but to help them discover how best they study, that’s my motto.
